April in Labin and Rabac
Labin spring gastro rhapsody takes place throughout April at thirteen restaurants located in Labin area. Asparagus (called šparuge in the Istrian dialect) are the key ingredient of local spring menus. They are prepared in numerous ways, either as scrambled eggs (fritaja), risottos, home-made pasta called pljukanci and fuži with Istrian ombolo (smoked pork), or home-made bread seasoned with asparagus. Adriatic cuttlefish is caught in late winter and early spring, near a rocky coast, and the most famous specialties are cuttlefish stew (brodetto) with polenta and the black cuttlefish risotto. Days of Asparagus and Cuttlefish are jointly organized by Labin-Rabac Tourist Board and the Craftsmen Association of Labin.

The traditional rowing boats’ race, called Teleferika, after a railway once used to transport bauxite from the local mines to Rabac bay shore, brings funny local rivalry and lots of adrenaline. Rabac inhabitants compete in popular voganje (rowing in the Rabac dialect) to pay tribute to superb Rabac fishermen, rowing from the waterfront to the right side of Rabac bay with Teleferika ruins. The locals also organize tug of war competition, and the party continues with grilled sardines and local wines.
