January in Labin and Rabac

Start of the Labin Carnival

Traditionally, on Antonja, i.e. St. Anton’s Day on January 17 begins the craziest season – the carnival season. The fifth season, as it is called, is a tradition of Istrian, Kvarner and Primorje regions. The tradition of carnival (called poklade or mesopust in the local dialects) in Labin is preserved by the carnival association Labinjonska kompanija – domoća folšarija that will take over Labin town keys and introduce its government. Along with the main carnival parade in Labin for adults and children, as well as numerous village carnival fests across the Labin area, the carnival rule lasts until March 5, when the doll Pust is traditionally burned, found guilty for all the bad things in the past period and announcing the arrival of spring.

New Look of Baćac Winery

The well-known winemaker Goran Baćac from Kukurini near Pićan opened the renovated wine cellar of his great-grandfather Anton, completing the wine story of the four generations of the Baćac family. Goran, whose wines were awarded numerous prizes at competitions throughout Istria and Croatia, along with a basement with stainless steel barrels and a tasting salon, restored the old great-grandfather's cellar, which now has a new look. The entrance to the wine cellar is reminiscent of a wine museum designed by the local interior designer Roberta Razzi. Particularly attractive is the glass floor with the first 1920 barrique barrel, paying tribute to the founder of the winery, Goran's great-grandfather Anton Toni, whose photograph is on the wall together with his three heirs. From the cellar walls you can read the family wine story in five languages. Wooden barrels store the fruits of 4 hectares of vineyards of the finest Istrian Malvasia, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Muscat. The wine story of the Baćac family started in the early 20th century when Anton Tone Baćac planted his small vineyard and got the first 50 liters of wine. His son, Anton Tonin Baćac, now a 90-year-old, has expanded his work and sold wine in Labin, Sv. Marina and Koromačno, where he travelled using a horse-drawn carriage, and the journey lasted for three days!
