March in Labin and Rabac
The two-week Days of the Labin Republic Day program celebrates the 99th anniversary of the historic miners' riot that took place on March 2, 1921. The miners’ strike known as the Labin Republic was one of the first riots against fascism in Europe, and the workers' self-government of the Labin miners survived for only a month, until April 8, 1921. To meet the 100th anniversary the program will last till March 8, including the illumination of the monument dedicated to miners, designed by the academic painter Quintino Bassani of Labin and Berislav Iskra, an architect from Pula. Until that date, you are invited to taste the special miners’ menus (Kovarski meni) at the local restaurants.
The scientist, theologian and reformer Matthias Flacius Illyricus (Labin March 3, 1520 - Frankfurt a/M, March 11, 1575) is the most famous historical figure of Labin whose national and international celebration of the 500th birth anniversary lasts from March to October 2020. Due to his education and work Matthias Flacius Illyricus was an erudite man of European dimensions and a citizen of Europe, and because of his extraordinary influence on the philosophical and theological doctrine of the 16th century, the interest in his work does not cease to this day. Celebrating Flacius' year will begin on his birthday on March 3, with the day of the Matthias Flacius Primary School in Labin, and in March there will be a promotion of the Student Handbook and the premiere of the documentary. The 5th International Science Conference on Matthias Flacius Illyricus will take place in April, with about twenty scientists from Croatia, Europe and the United States, a premiere of a theatre play and a documentary exhibition at the European Parliament in Brussels. Summer cultural programs organized by the Town of Labin will also be dedicated to Flacius at the Labin Art Republic in the Spheena Dox program and at the annual art exhibition Uzlet likovnosti. Theatrical performance dedicated to Flacius will also be played in July and August on Špina stage. There will also be a booklet with a lecture by Mate Balota held in Labin in 1962 on the topic of three famous Labinians: Baldo Lupetina, Matthias Flacius Illyricus and Giuseppina Martinuzzi.
The National Museum of Labin, in cooperation with the University Library of Pula, will organize an exhibition of Flacius' books from their holdings.
The Information and Interpretation Room dedicated to the history of mining in Labin has been opened at the National Museum of Labin. The development of the Mining Interpretation Centre was part of the project of the Labin Rabac Tourist Board, which is a project partner of the EU project "Inspiration" as part of the Interreg V-A Slovenia-Croatia Cross-border Cooperation Program 2014-2020. The room is designed by Marko Sančanin, and it was opened by Labin Mayor Valter Glavičić. In this way, the town of Labin pays tribute to its mining history, promotes and connects culture, tourism and industrial heritage.
